How to use System File Checker tool (SFC /scannow) to fix Windows system files

System File Checker is genuine Microsoft Windows tool that allows user to repair damaged or renew missing Windows system files easy like stealing candy from a baby. :)

Navigate to:

Windows 10, 7, Vista:

  1. Click Windows start button or press Windows Logo Key and in Search line type “cmd” and DON’T press Enter.
  2. Right click on cmd.exe and choose Run as administrator, click Allow.
  3. Type “sfc /scannow” (without quotes) and hit Enter.

  4. It will take some time for scan to end.

Windows 8.1 or Windows 8:

  1. Press Widows Logo Key+C and choose Search option.
  2. Type Command Prompt in Search string,  right click on Command prompt and choose Run as administratorYes.
  3. Type “sfc /scannow” (without quotes) and press Enter.
  4. Wait for verification to complete.

Scan Results.

After scan is finished, you may get one of the following massages:
  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.”
  • This means that you don’t have any problems with your Windows system files.
  • “Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.”
  • This means that you must run System File Checker in Safe Mode.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log…”
  • This means that repair of Windows system files was successful.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log…”
  • This means that you must run System File Checker in Safe Mode or replace corrupted files manually.
